Suspect Shot by Taneytown Police Officer Print

A Carroll County man who attempted to run over a Taneytown police officer is
being treated at a Baltimore hospital under police guard for a non-life
threatening gunshot wound received when the officer fired in self-defense,
according to a Maryland State Police (MSP) press release.

The suspect has been identified as Gary D. Wolfe of the
300-block of E. Main St. in Westminster. He is being charged with two counts
of first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault. The officer
involved was Corporal Brian M. Jestes, an 11-year veteran of the Taneytown
Police Department.

At 10:15 p.m. on July 8 Jestes was dispatched to the 400-block
of Baltimore Street in Taneytown in response to a woman, Sarah M. Henry, who
needed assistance. Upon driving down Break Iron Road, an access road, he
found the woman lying in the roadway and screaming. Witnesses told
investigators that Wolf and Henry had been in an argument and has seen him
pull her out of his car and leave her on the street.

Moments after he got out of his cruiser to help her the officer
saw a 1992 Acura Integra accelerating toward them, driven by Wolfe. After
ordering him to stop and receiving no compliance the officer fired upon the
vehicle, hitting Wolfe in the arm and causing the car to decelerate enough
to allow him and the Henry to avoid getting hit.

Wolfe was treated by responding EMS units before being flown to
the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center by a MSP helicopter.
According to the report Wolfe and Henry were acquaintances, but the motive
for the incident is unknown.

Taneytown Police Chief William Tyler requested the scene be
investigated by the MSP. While investigating the state police arrested a man
who arrived and became disorderly. Henry was taken into custody after police
discovered she was wanted on warrants from Harford County.
Jestes was placed on paid administrative leave, as is procedure.
The Taneytown Police Department has 12 officers. The investigation is
ongoing.
